WASHINGTON DC

Washington DC, the capital and seat of government of the United States of America, has 4 city districts. It was founded in the year 1790 and is the the only city-state of the United States. Including Baltimore resident here are living over eight million people. The capital owes its name George Washington. George Washington was the first President of the United States of America. Regardless of the state of Washington (in the north-east of the country) is the capital of Washington DC in the middle east of the country. Important rivers in the east coast of the country are the Anacostia River, Tiber Creek, Potomac River, Rock Creek, Hickey Run and Oxon Creek.

In Washington DC there are also the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Organization of American States (OAS) and the World Bank. As the main buildings here are standing: the White House and the Capitol (Congress), and outside the city, the Pentagon. The Statue of Liberty, the Washington National Cathedral, Arlington National Cemetery, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument, the building of the Supreme Court, the National Gallery of Art, the Blair House, the National Air and Space Museum, the Botanical Garden, the National Mall (4-km-long street), Vietnam Veterans Memorial and numerous Memorials and museums are worth visiting.

The holidays in the United States of America are: 1 January is New Year s Day, the third Monday of January is Martin Luther King Jr s Birthday, the third Monday in February is President s Day, the last Monday in May is Memorial Day, 4 July is Independence Day, the first Monday in September is Labor Day, the second Monday in October is Columbus Day, 11 November is Veteran s Day, fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving Day, 25 December is Christmas. Furthermore, by the middle or end of June to early September are the main holiday periods. As everywhere in the United States in autumn, it is pleasant to travel around.

The capital Washington DC has five universities. Notable among them are the Georgetown University, the George Washington University and the Howard University. In Washington there is an international airport. Others are nearby, eg in two in the state Virginia and one in the state Maryland. The Metro Rail system of the capital city has several lines. In addition, the city has 5 teams in the professional and major leagues (as the NBA).

The capital has a dozen twin cities from around the world. These include: Paris, Athens, Bangkok, Ankara, Seoul, Beijing, Brussels, Dakar, etc.

Raymond Davis Jr. (chemist and Nobel prise winner), Al Gore (Vice President), John F. Kennedy Jr. (lawyer and the son of John F. Kennedy), Samuel L. Jackson (actor) are just a few well-known people from Washington DC. There were, and of course there are, many other valuable writers, actors, directors, singers, composers, politicians, athletes, scientists, dancers, etc.
