Gothenburg
Göteborg

The second largest city of Sweden is Gothenburg. Gothenburg is a major city in the Swedish province V stra Götalands l n. The inhabitants of the city with the metropolitan area are close to a million. Gothenburg with the surrounding community is divided into 21 districts.
The port city is located on the banks of the river Göta lv, on the west coast of Sweden. The river flows into the Kattegat; similar to Stockholm and its lakes. The districts, which are north of the river, are located on the island of Hisingen. Hisingen is the fourth most populous island in Sweden. North of the harbour are also the islands Tjörn and Orust. Larger areas of Hisingen belong to the historical landscape Bohusl n. The southern areas of Gothenburg are located in V stergötland.

Before thousands years, the city was protected with many fortresses. Later it became a city of fisheries and by the intense trade with the neighbouring countries through the port carried it helped to industrialization. The construction of the canal by the Göta (connection to the Baltic Sea on the major freshwater lakes V nern and V ttern), the establishment of banks, shipyards, locks and bridges in the 19th Century and the establishment of factories, businesses, in particular, the textile industry, and later tobacco and sugar industry in the 20th Century, brought the port town Little London to the largest export port in northern Europe. Because of the competition were the yards given up in the course of time. Therefore, the city has now shipping, the steel industry and many universities.
