The history of the second largest city in Denmark dates back to the Vikings. Because Aarhus is located at the Aarhus bay in eastern Jutland. Up to the 17 Century, the city developed into a maritime city. In the 19th Century, the city Aarhus was the largest city of Jutland. Over the next 100 years, the city has developed further and in 1928 it joined the University of Aarhus. That was the second ever in Denmark and now has a beautiful and large University Park. The city is also the seat of the Commercial High School Aarhus, Aarhus School of Architecture, the Music Conservatory of Aarhus, the drama school at the theater and the playwright school at the Theatre Aarhus.

Today, the city has about 300,000 inhabitants (2007). Together with the region will almost triple. Aarhus is the commercial centre of Jutland. In Aarhus are also headquarters of the second-largest Danish brewery group (Bryggerigruppen). There are produced mainly goods of machinery and textile industry. From the port are mainly agricultural products exported and imported are coal and iron. The seaport is located in the Kattegat. This sea area is between Jutland and the Swedish west coast. This port is an often driven sea area, for example to Gothenburg, Copenhagen and the other Baltic ports. Important ferry lines are connecting the city with Frederikshavn, Gothenburg, Larvik, Moss, Kiel and Oslo. The seaport is also the largest container port in Denmark. In addition to the many highways, rural roads and the rail network, on different points of the city it is possible to borrow bicycles against lien.


Featured in Aarhus value is the open-air museum Den Gamle By (see photo). This museum was founded in 1914 and has the urban culture, economics and history as a theme. Numerous historical half-timbered houses and other buildings are here. The marketplace, the Post Office, the windmills and the many exhibitions on brewery, old clocks, costumes, tools, textiles, silversmiths goods, toys, earthenware and other objects arouse interest. There are also other programs, plays, seminars and lectures held. The place for all these is the 1961 built Elsinore Theatre. Also in Mejlgade, Vestergade Skolegade and can be seen some timbered houses of Denmark.

Furthermore, the following locations will be viewed with its special features: the Cathedral of Aarhus with the high altar (of Bernt Notke), the tombstones and epitaphs (12th century), the Church of St. Mary ant its crypt, the botanical garden, the Town Hall (1941) with its 60 m high bell tower, parks, and much more.
The museum Moesg rd (1970) is located in an ancient forest in the south of the city and hosts exhibitions, finds from ancient times, the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, a stave church and workshops, Viking houses and a nice big garden with bridges, various old trees, lake, and so on.
Continued to the southwest, there is the Marselisborg Castle. This castle is the summer residence of the royal family.

The city of Aarhus, the centre of Jutland, has additional special features: in the year 1960 the Europe Prize was awarded. The reason for the award were the outstanding efforts for the European integration thoughts. Besides, in 1988 the Aarhus Convention was signed in this city. As the conventions of the UNE/CE (Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations), this is the first international treaty on the rights of every person in matters of environmental protection.
